Lisa Bastoni: Music

Apple

(Lisa Bastoni)
"What a beautiful day," he said
Pointing to the fireplace
Sometimes our eyes connect
Sometimes I believe
He can see the outline of my sad face
His artist eyes
Have grown cloudy and blind
His generous heart grown weak
My mother calls and says, "he's gone"
And I am broken
In the quiet I sing 'cause I can't yet speak

Fare thee well
Time will tell
If I can eat the whole apple
Suck the marrow from the chicken bone
If I can pick up your love
If I can make that love be alive
And turn that love into my own
I'm not alone

In the paper it said
An intuitive engineer
Was survived by his beloved wife
My brave grandmother
Drove to the church
With the details of his life
From the Navy to the painting school
To the love that has no end
All I can say is he saved my life
By being my best friend

I saw him in the airport lounge
His red hand touched my knee
Sweet angel, he carried me home
And he spoke to me

He said fare thee well
Time will tell
If you can eat the whole apple
Suck the marrow from the chicken bone
You can pick up my love
And make that love be alive
And turn that love into your own
You're not alone

Did I thank you for your stories
The paintbrush, the guitar?
Did you know that you'd leave
Such an empty space?
Did you know this would be so hard?
When you left me with the strength
To console myself
And the faith to carry on
"Change is constant," you said
And even a midnight of misery
Is followed by a very clear
And brilliant dawn

Fare thee well
Time will tell
If I can eat the whole apple
Suck the marrow from the chicken bone
Pick up your love
And make that love be alive
And turn that love into my own
I'm not alone
I'm not alone
